More colorful skulls at a local restaurant

The Day of the Dead celebrations are continuing on my blog as I share some new photos with you! You might remember a picture I took of a skeleton that was on top of someone's car during the parade. The skeleton had a moving body made of pipes and was there to advertise a restaurant called Riviera Maya. My mom and I decided to check it out.

The restaurant was so cool! There were plenty of artistic decorations there and we were told that the sculptures and paintings change. So there's a reason to keep coming back! (That and the super nice service and food.)

This is the bar area:

A large paper mache skeleton couple stood next to our table.

This is part of the mural that covers much of the wall. I don't know what's going on here, but it doesn't look good for that one guy!

Mom took this one of the little demon skeleton. There's a neat glass gun behind it. I think that was a liquor container at one point.

After we ate lunch, we were told that there was an entire side room of art if we'd like to look at it. Of course we wanted to look, so they nicely opened it for us.

This might scare a few of you...

With all the spooky clown stuff I've seen, I don't think I've ever seen a skeleton clown. It was pretty large and hovering above us. The clown was cool and a little imposing in the dark room!

This is awesome! Do you think it's a dragon?

Another mural:

I'm pretty sure I saw this Marilyn skeleton in the Day of the Dead gallery show years back.

A lounging skeleton:

This one was so cute - a ballerina skeleton:

Aww... I  love her eyelashes.

A dragon or lizard crawling down the wall:

A button nose:

A cute little ladybug and sunflower skull:

I'm not sure what he is. An evil cannonball? I really like this, whatever he is.

I hope you enjoyed this second set of pictures. I also wanted to share a song I found while looking for Day of the Dead music. I love this:

Have you ever played Grim Fandango?

    1. Mantan ~ Nope, which is probably what I'd answer if you asked if I'd played just about any video/computer game. :) I just looked it up and watched the Grim Fandango trailer on YouTube. Looks like it had its funny moments. I like the character design. The trailer had a retro feel to it, like a lot of 40's movies I've seen. From what I've been reading about the game, it sounds like a clever concept. Is this a favorite game of yours? It seemed to have a big following, judging by the YouTube comments.

  2. Very Cool! The murals are wonderful - as if you could step off into one of them. And all those lovely skeletons. And other macabre-ness! :o)

    1. Jeanne ~ The murals were great! That first one gave the restaurant a really authentic feel. Both murals were large, taking up a long wall space. That one with the Mayan pyramids looked almost photographic. Yeah, I did feel like I could step into it, especially at that size. There were a lot of lovely skeletons there! It was so fun to look around. There were skeleton surprises around every corner. :)

    1. Dex ~ Me too! I love the mixture of skulls/skeletons with bright colors and flowers. There are some mysterious critters in the mix. Possible dragons and whatever the last one is. A little cannonball demon? A fiery olive? Any ideas on what that last critter is?

    2. No clue! It kinda reminds me of Pokemon with it's odd angular design. lol

    3. Dex ~ I can see that! Yeah, that creature is totally Pokemon! I'm trying to page through my memories, because I feel like there was something in that cartoon that looked a lot like this creature. Wouldn't it be funny if the artist was inspired by Pokemon?

    1. Lady M ~ I'd like to hear from the artist about what inspired that creature. Probably not a cannonball, but that's how it is in my mind. :)

    1. Julie ~ Definitely! I loved being surprised by all this great art. We overheard some people saying that the restaurant staff made some of the art. How cool is that? I like the Marilyn skeleton too. She's still glamorous, even as a skeleton. :)

    1. Mark ~ Well, this time I had a heads up from an advertisement at the Day of the Dead parade. The people advertising the restaurant had a big moving skeleton on top of their vehicle. I'll definitely be back to this restaurant since the art changes. That and the food/service was great. Yeah, there's something funny about someone built like Marilyn being portrayed as a skeleton. :)
