My Friday the 13th full moon photos

For those of you who were lucky enough to have clear skies last Friday, you would have had the chance to see a full moon on Friday the 13th. How cool is that? It's also unique. This won't happen again until the year 2049. The last time this happened was in the year 2000. I was fortunate enough to have clear skies above me and a good view of the moon. Here are a few of the shots I got of it:

The night before, I caught some nearly full views of the moon. I like this shot because the moon was a little bit higher and being cradled by the leaves.

The following pictures were taken at a local park on that nearly full moon Thursday. For some reason, I had a better view there. The moon was surprisingly gold at that point in the evening - almost like a harvest moon. This is my favorite photo of the evening:

A few minutes before, the sky looked very mysterious. The clouds were moving quickly across the moon.

So, did any of you catch a glimpse of the moon either of these two nights?

P.S. ~ I may have shared this before, but it's the perfect music to view these pictures with. "Night Mist" by Adrian von Ziegler:

  2. Those are great photos! The whole 2049 thing got a lot of traction online but isn't exactly true if you want to get all science-y ;)

    1. Dex ~ Thanks! It's interesting what the author said about the moon being more full on Thursday their time. Then I guess I covered all the bases by taking pictures of Thursday's moon. :) I see what he's saying about the moon being in slightly different phases depending on your time zone in 2049. It makes sense that it's not full on Friday the 13th everywhere in the world at once. So this would not be exact for everyone. But some of us in a certain time zone will be seeing that future full moon, and everyone else will be seeing something pretty darn close. I was thinking about time zones a little while taking these photos. As I took them, it wasn't even Friday the 13th anymore in some countries!

    2. Regarding the color, I heard it called a Honey Moon, which was a term I'd never heard before.

    3. Dex ~ What a cool photo on that site you sent! That was a really neat location to photograph the moon. The Honey Moon is the perfect name for it. It was interesting reading an explanation of why the moon appeared that way. Sounds like pollution could have played a role in the same way it does with those vibrant sunsets.

One of the most interesting parts of that article is about the term "honeymoon" coming from the Honey Moon that occurs in June, when many people are getting married. I never thought about why wedding honeymoons were named that, but this sounds like a good reason! Thanks for sending that info.

    1. Jeanne ~ Thank you! Isn't it surprising to see a moon that color in June?

  4. Beautiful! One day I might have a camera of some description that produces such professional shots!

    1. Ali ~ Thank you! The camera has helped big time. My last camera didn't have the kind of lens that could focus that clearly and closely to the moon. I get shots now that I couldn't have dreamed of before! I think I shared the kind of camera I have with you, but if not, it's the Canon PowerShot SX260. I have no complaints with it! It gets great macro shots too.

  5. Wow! Those turned out great! Good to read about your camera doing good macro photos too. We've been looking for an inexpensive one for some jewelry close ups my wife wants to do. I'll have to check out the Canon. Thx for sharing!

    1. Mark ~ Thank you! :) This camera does amazing work for the price. I really recommend it. I think it would work very well for jewelry close ups. It also captures color in a way my last camera wasn't. Everything looks more vibrant and rich than it did before. Let me know if you get one of these!

  8. Yes, I caught the Friday the 13th moon, I was out all night, mostly sleeping, but under it. I thought about taking a pic but I stupidly didn't. But when I woke up the next morning I thought, "I know Justine got a picture of this!" I love the gold moons! I try to take pictures of these but I can never capture the gold or the size. Do you mind if I make a copy of one of your pics and put text on it?

    1. Matt ~ I was just thinking to send this post to you, because you've commented on my photos of the moon. When I went here to grab the link, I saw that you'd just commented. What timing!

Haha! Yeah, you can rely on me to photograph the moon. :) I was glad to have a clear sky above me that night. Nope, I don't mind if you add some text to it. Do you have a moon quote in mind?

Was the moon looking gold when you saw it on Thursday or Friday?

  9. Yeah, I try to keep track of your blog posts, so I check periodically :) Apparently we were online at the same time, or, we're becoming psychically linked!

I want to label it "The Friday the thirteenth Full moon" in horror fonts - I'll show you what I come up with!

Out here in California I didn't notice the gold moon on the 12th, but I did get up at 4:00am on the 13th and saw the moon early since the sun doesn't come out till later - so I saw the 13th moon early in the am.

    1. Matt ~ Hey, who knows! At the very least, it was some surprising timing. I look forward to seeing which horror font you choose for the photo!

I bet the moon looked pretty light around 4:00 am, although I wouldn't really know. I try not to be up at that time! :)

  10. Ooky cool pics, Justine! The latter ones look like Castlevania 64, where the moon is full and golden, signifying Dracula's return...

    1. Chris ~ Thank you! I had to look up Castlevania, because I didn't know what it was. I figured that it was a movie! I'm not up on video games as you can tell. :) That sounds cool, though! I looked up some of it on YouTube, so I'm watching someone play through it. I see the big full moon in what I'm assuming is the window of a castle. There's some weird purple sea creature type thing floating around and what looks like a purple demon. Ah, I see Dracula! He's kind of ghostly looking. This is pretty cool. It reminds me of how video games used to look. Things have changed a lot!
