Neo-Gothic Grandeur

This beautiful Gothic mansion sits along Milwaukee's lakefront. The gorgeous turrets, lacy fringe, and other ornate details make me want to whip out my art history books and find the names of all the architectural elements involved!

When I was younger, I wanted to live in this house. Not that I would exactly reject an offer to live there now...Can you imagine what could be done with this place for Halloween!?

I really wanted to learn the history behind this mansion, but I had to do some serious digging to find any information! I can tell you that it was built in the Neo-Gothic/Victorian Gothic style during the 1890s. Since it was built in Milwaukee during this time, I guessed that it might have belonged to one of the beer barons. I was correct! This beautiful house was a gift from Captain Fredrick Pabst to his daughter Marie when she married William O. Goodrich. The mansion next door to this one was commissioned by Capt. Pabst's son in 1906. It's outstanding in its own right, but it was designed in a completely different fashion.

Captain Pabst's mansion is also beautifully detailed. His mansion is rumored to be haunted, and his daughter's house looks like it should be. It's really no wonder that I love this house. It was built during my favorite time period in one of my favorite styles. Milwaukee is full of amazing architecture and is rich with history. For those who like Victorian houses, there are a lot of them to see. If you do believe in ghosts or at least have a little imagination, the mansion tours are even more fun!

  2. Yes, I read that someone does live there. From the looks of things, the house is separated into sections that are rented out. What really bugged me years ago was seeing a window air conditioner in one of those turret windows!

I also read that they don't open the place for tours. :( There are plenty of other Victorian mansion tours in Milwaukee, but sadly there isn't one here!

  4. It sure is! Why would you want it any smaller?

  5. Grew up in Milwaukee. Never saw anything that cool.
Leave it to the Beer Barons to build such a cool monument!

  6. Oh, yeah. Some of the best houses here were built by the beer barons. This one is near the water tower, if you remember where that is. It's sounding like you haven't been in Milwaukee for a while?

  7. I get back to visit family and friends a few times a year. After college (now going on 26 years ago) I was lured away from the state I love to the enemy south of the border by of course, Mrs October Boy. Although I don't get there as often as I would like, It's still one of the best cities in my opinion and will always be my "home"

  8. Yeah, Milwaukee is a great city! There is so much to do here. I'm guessing that you're in Illinois from that comment. :) Well, the next time you're in Milwaukee, you can find this mansion on Terrace Ave. which is by Lake Dr. overlooking Lake Michigan.

  10. Hehe Yeah, I think most of us Milwaukeeans would get that reference. :) Cool! Yeah, while you're at it, check out the Brumder Mansion (another Victorian beauty). That one is haunted and you can actually go inside of it, because it's been made into a bed and breakfast!

  11. Me too! I've wanted it for years! Can you imagine how fun it would be to decorate the interior? I'd go crazy shopping for Victorian decor. :)

  12. My friend Andy actually lives kitty corner from the house next door(the oldest son Gustave's house). I've been in the back of it because his friend purchased it from auction and let me tell you both places have a view! I also know the goodrich mansion is owned by one person not rented as a duplex. That street is full of beautiful historic homes!

    1. Dakota ~ Wow! I can only imagine the view these places get of the lake. Really? I thought a few of these places were renting out rooms. Interesting... How are these houses decorated? Every time I pass by I wonder if they're decorated in a style that matches the age of the house.
