OK, Now onto the night! I'm excited to share these pics with you guys, because I think some of these props really came alive at night. The photos I'm starting with were taken on an unseasonably warm and foggy night. I thought it would be fun to take a walk in the older section of town in the fog and dark. It turned out to actually be scary out there. It's been a long time since I've been scared by a Halloween yard display. I guess the atmosphere added a lot!
I'm starting off with a favorite photo from that night. You might remember this prop from my last blog post. I wasn't aware that it moved and talked until that night. So I'm out there alone in the fog, taking pictures of this yard, and all of a sudden this prop lights up, starts hovering above me, and saying spooky things. I don't even remember what those spooky words were, I was just so startled. I think this yard is lit so beautifully.
When this figure lights up, its skull is visible. As you can see, it was above me. The tombstone gives this ghost some height.
The graveyard under the ghost looks much more creepy at night.
Seriously, how pretty are these pink and purple lights? I don't remember this yard being lit so well last year. That figure with the hair covering her face was freaking me out at night too. When you're out in the dark, everything makes you do a double-take. Like, "Is that an actual person?" What's funny is that one time in the daylight, the man who goes with this house was sitting on his porch more or less blending in with all this. So you really don't know. Man, if he'd been sitting out there in the dark that night, I would have jumped out of my shoes!
This is the yard across the street. I was disappointed to not see their decorations lit up, because they had a lot of great critters. But what they did light, looked frightful.
By the time I wandered to this next house, I was already a bit on edge. I'd walked past where I'd planned to. Well, this house I didn't even remember seeing during the day. I wandered up to it to see the neon sign in the window and didn't even see that figure below it! I took my photo, looked at it, and freaked out. It took me a moment to realize that figure was a decoration. It didn't move, anyway. If you want to scare people at night, get one of these.
I managed to focus my camera to get the sign, and check that out. No Vacancy... Maybe that's Norman in the window?
I think some of these streets I was walking on could use some street lights. If I'd realized how dark it would be, I would have brought a flashlight. Good thing I have these paths memorized! Anyway, here's a skeleton-filled yard that was worth walking to in the dark! I just noticed the tiny bat skeleton.
Here's the toxic waste skellie at night. It looks like they made use of some black light paint. I now see a tiny little skeleton sitting at what is probably a Barbie picnic table with a little teapot.
Doesn't this remind you of the jack-o-lantern from the original Halloween movie? It doesn't have the same cut shapes, but there's something about the crudeness of it. And it has that skeleton mouth.
That last jack-o-lantern and this cool mental lantern were sitting under a pine tree and were the only light I saw for about a block.
I thought this was a well-lit, classy display. It looked like something Steins would put together.
That's the end of the Halloween decorations from that night, but I'll share a few pics I took on the way back to my car. This will give you an idea of how dark it was, but I still chose some pics with street lamps, otherwise I guess you'd just be looking at a black rectangle.
I like the look of old streetlights and leaves at night.
By the time I got back to my car that night, I'd been walking for an hour. I know this because the town's clock was slowly chiming bong... bong... bong. Let me tell you, that further added to the ambience. After an hour of leaving my car in that fog, it was drenched. It took a bit of time to get the windshield in shape so I could see to drive!
So onto another side of town. Remember this guy? He did not disappoint at night! I'm so glad this display was lit up.
His buddy was standing there next to him, also lit up. I can really understand the popularity of these skeletons, because they're awesome.
There were some fun inflatables a few blocks away.
This one was new to me. It looks like the pumpkin is wearing that hat until the skeleton pops out.
I'm not sure what this one is. A wicked onion? Maybe it's some sort of jack-in-the-box with a Frankenstein bottom?
This house was so festive. I'm not sure how old the house is. I might take a better look at it in the light. But it seems a little older. The doorway is just right for this.
These people can always be relied on for fun holiday decorations.
The beer drinking skeleton is back on the roof.
And his buddy is down on the porch railing.
Another one of my favorite newer decorations:
Who knew that these had led eyes too! I sure didn't. I thought just the standing skeletons had those.
This yard is a Halloween photo gold mine.
Watch out Snoopy!
I can almost hear that pumpkin laughter.
This is one of my favorite photos in this blog post. Wow.
The eyes are still eerie even when they're milky and in the process of adjusting.
There's that Michael Myers again in another person's doorway.
You'll know which yard this is! These next pics are going to be a little Sepia toned. I guess that's just how the lighting was. So they have a creepy, antique look to them.
I like what the shadows are doing in her cemetery at night.
A spooky little light cover:
I'm not always into these moving light projectors, but I liked this one. There were so many bright colors and the images were moving around at nice speed. Do any of you have those light projectors? They look easy enough to use, but I have no experience with them. Some of the snowflake ones look nice at Christmas.
So there we have it! What do you guys think? I think I'm pretty lucky with what's available to see at Halloween around here. And I'm also feeling lucky to still be able to get a little scared by Halloween decorations. I'm sure when the kids go trick-or-treating to some of these places after dark, they'll feel the same. 🍬
