People around here have really been in the Halloween spirit this year, and I have been photographing their handiwork whenever I see it! So, get ready to see a lot of photos. I was pretty impressed with what I saw. The giant props pack a punch and can be pretty scary, but there's something fun and unpredictable about the homemade or more assembled decorations. You'll see some of both here.
Isn't this a great use of cornstalks? They make a nice, tall body for this pumpkin creature.
This vampire feels vintage to me. Do you think this is maybe a vintage mask attached to a foam head? I just now noticed that they attached a belt to this figure.
This is a pretty prop-filled yard every year. These red-cloaked skeletons were lining the street, and they made good use of the crossing sign here.
I think this little creeper is pretty effective! I photographed this house again at night, but not much of it was lit up. I was hoping that they'd light up this clown. What was lit up, looked great. You'll see all that in the next blog post.
I'm never sure what's going on with this ghostie. It has some kind of Voodoo doll/skeleton face. And what do you think the hair is made of?
Blech! Oh, even the gravestone has a shrieking face.
Looks like that spider has a hold on her. Maybe this is Little Miss Muffet? 🕷
This yard is across the street from the last and it is one of the best. We've had some strong winds lately, and some of the props had been scattered. But here's a lot of what they had out.
Here's a strangely positive tombstone inscription, considering everything happening around it!
He's actually pretty intense. It's like his entire face is twisting.
I've seen this prop in a few yards this year. It looks great with the sunlight and wind moving through it. It also looks amazing at night!
And that hand raised above! Do you guys know where people are buying this prop? I haven't seen it in any stores.
Here's some creativity. I think I shared this one last year.
What a great use of one of those bushes! Just add legs and eyes and you have a spider.
I enjoy walking past this house, because there's so much to look at. It just feels like a friendly place. The house is on a narrow path. This is on the path side of the house.
All the little Autumn woodland creatures.
This metal piece of candy with the jack-o-lantern face is one of my favorite decorations.
The back of this house is also great. There's a wood tree house/jungle gym that is always decorated for holidays. And next to that is this hanging chair.
This was at the front of the house. This glamorous skull looks like it should be in New Orleans.
I like orange pumpkins with blue houses. That's all I have to say here!
Grr...
This yard was so fun! There was a sign in it saying "Have fun, take a selfie" I didn't feel like going up in their yard, even if they were inviting everyone. And that is pretty nice of them. Anyway, I got some non-selfie photos of their decorations. Those boots or leg warmers are so funny to me on skeleton legs!
Those pirate boots too!
That's a cute little headband.
How great is this? If you've watched all the Halloween movies, you'll find this funny too. And it appears Michael Myers is returning from the grave yet again!
And here he is! I think I saw this door cover for sale at Spirit Halloween this year. It doesn't even look plasticy here. Just natural and menacing.
Haha! I don't know, but I get a kick out of the fur/hair. Looks like they eat a large amount of Swedish Fish at this house. Or maybe that's what they're giving out for treats.
I loved this! Have you ever seen a gutter-peeking ghoulie? Way to use everything available!
I haven't seen this wreath for sale anywhere, so I'm thinking this is a DIY. I have seen Freddy's claws for sale. I wonder where you could find the street sign? Anyway, pretty creative.
More of that orange pumpkin and blue paint combination I like so much.
A person could do so much with these coffin shelves! I would actually think of decorating the coffin indoors. You could put so many candles and decorations on the different shelves. And good job to whoever carved that pumpkin down by the skull. They must have a strong wrist to have that much control with a knife.
Do any of you have these floating candles? I ask because I want to know if they are each individually battery operated. I saw some for sale recently that were like that. Before I guess I'd assumed that they were all working off the same power source. Those candles are very Harry Potter, aren't they?
Here's that tombstone ghost again, in a different yard.
She's an eerie one. This is another house I revisited at night in the hopes of seeing these props lit up, but nope.
I mean, how great would this guy have looked up-lit with a red light at night?
These two musical skeletons were in the same front yard. I wish they'd been playing some music to go with the theme! That would probably drive their neighbors nuts, but still.
Those vibrant blue eyes are a nice touch.
There was a skeleton dinner party happening on the side of their yard.
I don't know if they intended this, but how cool is that skeleton's shadow showing through the chair?
They are drinking from these fitting skeleton hand glasses. Do you see the eyeballs floating inside?
There was a ton of skeleton action across the street from that last house! The end of this block was a real find.
I'm trying to figure this one out. I think he's coming out of a coffin? Something about this says magician's prop to me. I see a tiny fairy skeleton perched on the box.
Their giant skeleton got some horns this year.
I think this skeleton is grilling a piranha and frog, among other things, and this big skeleton dog is coming over for some of it. Or maybe it's a big skeleton pig. I can't really tell.
Toxic waste skeleton? I'm not sure what's going on here, but I like the wig.
I'm not sure if you can tell here, but this skeleton has been chased up a tree by a skeleton dog.
How perfect is this skeleton on the roof? These giant skeleton torsos are some of my favorite props from the past few years. I've seen them looking good in yards too. Check out the tiny skeletons crawling up to him.
Remember the spinning eye skeleton inflatable from Menards? I was excited to see it in a yard. I just noticed that cute little vintage cat in the lower right hard corner.
A cute mini inflatable:
Remember these ceramic ghost decorations from Stein's? Well, I finally saw one in someone's yard. I think they did a repaint, because both the ghost and pumpkin look brightened up. I like it a lot better this way!
Check out this massive reaper scarecrow! You know I love the creepy scarecrows. Look how he even towers over the roof of this house. I was happy to see that these people light their props at night.
How sinister is that face? I took this pic with a zoom, so I didn't even know the face looked like this until now. It's hardly something you can see from across the street. Wow.
I finally got to see what one of those tree faces from Menards looks like on a tree. In my opinion, it looks waaaay better on a tree than it does in the store. It even fits the curve of this tree well.
Remember this place? There's a new witch this year, and she's a real drama queen.
Ta-da!
She's so horrifying, you get three pictures of her.
The usual witch is back with her cat.
The little skeleton bird in the cage might be new. The weathered shed is so perfect for this display.
This ghost is actually pretty creepy to me. Sometimes the most simple ghost props have an effect on me.
This is definitely new. I think it is an old propane tank.
This dragon is out year-round now. I got a picture of it wearing a Santa hat last Christmas. The shed is out year-round too.
She got a two-headed dragon to go with the usual dragon above.
I love what she's put together with antique wood pieces. You're not going to see anything else like this.
Remember Zero's little tombstone that scared me in the Spirit Halloween when it surprisingly went off? Well, it's a part of her cemetery and it's barking.
The creepy giant bat.
Her backyard is the one with all the scary scarecrows. She has the perfect fence to display them.
Their hand-stitched faces make them all the scarier.
This one reminds me of a shrunken head! It's actual size, but I'm talking about the way the mouth is stitched up.
How about this tree critter with branch-like arms? I think that little leaf stuck to his nose is a funny touch.
Beyond the scarecrow fence, she has a few more displays in her backyard.
This wrapped body form is pretty realistic. In fact, it's so realistic that I believe this is the house that someone called the police about last year. As if someone would just leave a body above ground 24/7 for all of October. Of course, someone could sneak a body into someone else's yard display. That's a morbid thought, but I suppose it could happen. Anyway, it didn't stop her from bringing it out again this year.
And she has her ghostly tea party out. This is spooky to me at night. The chandelier lights up and that's the only light there is.
So there you have it! Lots of decorations around town. I was actually picky about what I included. Wait until you see the night pics in my next blog post!

Wow, that's a lot of decorated houses! There's maybe one or two per street in my neighborhood.
ReplyDeleteI think that toxic waste barrel is a prop I've seen before. It has water inside and a tube that runs up the skeleton and out of it's mouth. When it's on, it looks like the skeleton in spewing into the barrel. There's usually a green light somewhere to give the spew a 'toxic' look.
Dex ~ Well... I should mention that I walk pretty far distances and these pics were taken on a few different days. But still, one of the sides of town is pretty well decorated. And by well decorated, I mean one or two houses per street. :)
DeleteReally? You've seen the toxic waste barrel skeleton? Oh, that's what was going on with the tube! I was trying to figure that out. That prop seemed really homemade to me, so that's interesting. I guess I assumed it was homemade because I was confused by it! Also, because of the wig.
This is random, but have you been to any bin stores? I have been visiting one regularly and go on the day when everything is down to $1. There are some amazing finds and a lot of those finds are tech related. I was thinking you'd actually know what to do with some of this stuff and would have a blast at one of those places!
When I was replying, I was looking for a link to show you and found a lot of videos on how to home-make this prop.
DeleteI have gone to a Bin store...once. I felt like I walked into someone's basement :D Didn't see anything interesting and it's located where I can only get to it on a weekend so I haven't ventured back.
Dex ~ Oh, OK. I, too, will go looking for those links.
DeleteYeah? Well, "someone's basement" may actually be an upgrade from the vibe of the place I'm going. But, I look forward to going there every week. In fact, tomorrow is my beloved $1 day. :) I'm lucky enough to have this place under five minutes from where I live. It's a shame you didn't see anything interesting at your bin store. I'm sure they're all different.
I was looking around last week thinking "I know this tech stuff is worth waaaay more than $1 but I don't know what it is." And then I was thinking you probably would know! If you actually know what you're looking at, you're in for a treat. Every health and beauty item I'm getting there would probably sell for at least $20. Some I looked up online and they go for $30. For me, it's like a high end beauty shop but for less than Dollar Tree prices! :D
Very festive community. The photo of the clown with the purple hair in the flower garden behind the old bicycle, that's a blue ribbon winning level photo!
ReplyDeleteHaunted Eve ~ Yeah! It seemed especially festive this year. I've been pretty impressed. I wonder if people got out and decorated a little more this year because we had such a warm fall?
DeleteThanks for your comment on my clown pic! :) There's something that cracks me up about a wicked little creature like that behind some pretty flowers.
Great report, Justine!
ReplyDeleteGood Old Me ~ Thank you! :)
